To end unequal pay for women, you need to do more than talk about it [Strange Solutions]

TLDR;
- Yes it is — BUT some rethink on how this should be done is needed.
- Most mainstream conversations on the topic rely around sexism alone. Solving the problem through de-biasing sexist attitudes alone is not enough.
- It is a decent starting point to help gather momentum; but also a very narrow lens with which to approach a very complex problem.
- To solve the problem, a more holistic acknowledgement/understanding of the issue is needed — this article serves to add to that understanding.
Context
- “Give us equal pay” has become a rallying cry from the female empowerment movement (comprising of both women and men).
- And it makes sense. If two people are delivering the same result they should be getting the same salary irrespective of their gender.
- Before going further, we need to acknowledge that delivering the same result is different from doing the same work.
- Just to be very clear: I don’t believe any sex, religion, race etc. has a monopoly delivering results. So the previous point is definitely not an apologetic justification for why women are paid less.
